Rapamycin fights many forms of cancer. Studies have shown that rapamycin can benefit lymphoma, mast cell tumors, and hemangiosarcoma in our dogs. While there was early excitement about rapamycin helping dogs with bone cancer, a recent study showed that there was little benefit. One advantage of rapamycin therapy for cancer patients is that it is a very safe pill that is given by you at home.
Rapamycin has been proven to support cardiac function and has actually been shown to improve cardiomyopathy in both dogs and cats.
Rapamycin reduces inflammation and thus can help dogs in pain live a happier and more active life
Rapamycin has been shown to help chronic kidney disease.

Rapamycin improves immune function. While at higher doses it is an immune suppressant, at the lower doses currently recommended, it actually works to stimulate the immune response and improve stem cell function.

The Matt Kaeberlein study found no adverse rapamycin side effects on dogs. In my own practice, I’ve found rapamycin to be the best pill to make dogs live longer. We have treated over 400 pets with rapamycin and found that 3-4% may develop transient GI upset which usually resolves in a day or two.

We don’t have the answer to this yet in dogs, but a rapamycin study in mice has shown a longevity benefit even when starting rapamycin late in life. This suggests that it is NEVER too late to begin rapamycin for your dog. Just click here to learn more.

Rapamycin is the only drug we know that can actually reverse the changes seen in cardiomyopathy, a common heart problem in dogs. Studies have shown it to reverse age-related heart problems in other species as well. Not every cardiac condition will be helped by rapamycin, but the combination of its longevity and anti-inflammatory benefits.. along with its safety... make a good argument for its use.

At higher doses in humans, rapamycin has been shown to increase blood sugar. If your pet is diabetic, you should chat with your vet or consult with me. Rapamycin is metabolized through the liver, so we should also pay attention to pets with liver problems.

That said, it has proven to be a very safe drug in our clinic, with only about 3% of pets developing a little loose stool which generally passes as their GI tract adapts.

There are no biomarkers, or direct measurements, of longevity in either humans or pets.

Rapamycin for my CHF 12 year old dog

I reached out to Dr. Toman after researching alternatives to treating dogs with CHF that your vet doesn't tell you about. I found the HelpingPets Live Longer website and began reading their findings. My Jaxs was diagnosed 2 years ago with CHF. And while all the meds he is on has slowed the progression on this disease, I believe the rapamycin has taken his illness to another level to further stop the progression of his heart enlarging even more. While he coughs due to certain ways he positions his body, he is still able to sleep through the night and his kidneys have not been affected as of this time.
