YOUR PET HURTS -- THE FIRST STEP.

The BEST way to help your painful pet is to get a set of x-rays so that we know exactly where your pet is actually painful.

Some general guidelines are…

  • If your older pet is limping in their front legs, it is usually their wrist or elbow. Why?  Because those joints are where the leg changes angle,  and thus they function as shock absorbers.
  • If your pet is running into hip problems, you will usually see “bunny hopping”, where your pet advances both hindlegs simultaneously.
  • The most common source of SUDDEN hindlimb pain is the knee. When your pet has a painful knee, they cannot sit with the knee tucked in against the body in a normal position – the affected knee splays out to one side.
  • Just as with us humans, knee or hip pain frequently causes back pain.

WHY IS  SOLVING YOUR PET'S PAIN SO IMPORTANT?

  • Because NOBODY should EVER be painful if we can do something about it. If your pet is limping, they need your help.
  • Because the inflammation associated with pain will shorten your pet’s life

HERE’S HOW TO HELP YOUR PAINFUL PET

  • PAIN RELIEF:
    • NSAIDs are still the best.
      • Carprofen, deramaxx, meloxicam are the most potent pain relievers
      • If your pet has GI/liver/kidney issues, consider galliprant. Safer but not as much pain relief.
    • Librela injections—every month at your vet
    • Tramadol is generally ineffective
    • Gabapentin is a moderate pain reliever and is commonly used for spinal problems, but can cause sedation as a side effect.
  • LIFESTYLE:
    • The thinner your pet is, the less painful they will be.
    • No stairs, no jumping, no twisting exercise.
    • Avoid slips and falls (ie, no tile or hardwood floors)
  • RAPAMYCIN, for its longevity and anti-inflammatory benefits
  • TRANSCENDFor joint pain, the supplement proven best is Undenatured Type 2 Collagen, or UC-II
  • LONGEVITY PLUSCurcumin is the most potent natural anti-inflammatory f or all sources of pain.  Boswellia is also a very good natural pain reliever, and we combine these potent natural pain relievers with ashwagandha to reduce stress.
  • OMEGA 3 FATTY ACIDS (Note that omega 6 fatty acids can actually worsen pain)
  • Studies now show that glucosamine/chondroitin products don't help painful joints
  • Laser therapy
  • Shockwave therapy
  • Acupuncture and massage
  • Adequan injections – your vet can show you how to do this at home
  • Intra-articular injections of steroids or hyaluronic acid
  • PRP and Stem Cell Therapy
