What to know before you buy berberine for your dog

Berberine is a natural plant extract that has been used for centuries in cultures across the world. It has been extensively studied and has been proven to benefit human and canine patients.

  • Berberine has a long history of use in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine. It has been used for hundreds of years and there are many studies on its safety and benefits.
  • Berberine can be considered the natural little brother of the commonly used drug metformin. Both act via the AMP-K pathway in cells to modulate energy and hormone levels. You can learn more here.
  • Berberine has antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer  properties.

Common problems addressed by berberine for dogs

Berberine has been proven to help patients with cardiac disease, help patients lose weight, and help fight infections. Not bad for a safe and natural compound.

  • Obesity: Approximately 56% of all dogs struggle with obesity, which can lead to problems ranging from lethargy to hypertension and even kidney disease.
  • High blood sugar: Dogs may suffer from high blood sugar even if they don’t have diabetes.  Not only does this predispose them to diabetes down the road, but high blood sugar also creates other metabolic and immune issues for our pets.
  • Heart disease: Your dog’s risk for heart disease increases as they age, with up to 75% of all senior dogs having some kind of heart condition. Both berberine and its prescription big brother, metformin, may help to maintain heart health.

Benefits of berberine for dogs

  • Weight loss: Some studies suggest berberine may actually be able to help with weight loss by preventing the formation of fat molecules in the body.
  • Regulate blood sugar: Used properly, berberine may be able to lower blood sugar by regulating blood glucose and blood lipids in the body.
  • Support cardiac function: Berberine has been shown to support the health of heart muscle, which is key to helping prevent many types of cardiac disease in mammals of all species.

FAQs about berberine and dogs

Yes! Berberine possesses many wonderful health benefits from helping dogs improve their heart health to fighting infection and reducing inflammation to regulating their blood sugar.

As an alkaloid, berberine can cause a whole range of GI issues, ranging from constipation to diarrhea. I would not use berberine for dogs to treat a GI issue, as there are more specific and beneficial products out there.

Berberine is generally very well tolerated by dogs. However, like many alkaloids, it can occasionally create GI issues for sensitive pets, including everything from constipation to diarrhea.

While berberine can help with weight control, it isn’t exactly a weight loss supplement for dogs because its weight loss benefits are generally mild. However, it is a very safe supplement with other health benefits, and a little extra weight loss is never a bad thing. Like most natural supplements, it will take 2-4 weeks to begin seeing results.
